How to Use

Auction Market Theory (AMT) was developed by J. Peter Steidlmayer at the Chicago Board of Trade in the early 1980s and later popularized by Jim Dalton in Mind Over Markets. It is the foundational framework behind Market Profile, Volume Profile, and VWAP analysis. Every serious institutional trader operates within this framework whether they call it by name or not. The core principles are straightforward:

  • Markets exist to facilitate trade — the primary purpose of any futures market is to connect buyers and sellers and enable transactions. Price is the mechanism the market uses to advertise opportunity — higher prices attract sellers and discourage buyers, lower prices attract buyers and discourage sellers. The market moves until both sides are willing to transact heavily in the same area.
  • Price and value are different things — price is where the market is trading right now. Value is where the market broadly agrees trade should occur. Price fluctuates constantly. Value shifts far less frequently. Understanding the difference between the two is what separates traders who react to noise from traders who respond to structure.
  • Markets operate in two distinct phases — Balance, where the market has found fair value, buyers and sellers broadly agree on price, and trading rotates within a defined range with neither side in control. A balanced market tends to stay balanced — mean reversion is the dominant behavior, trend-following fails, fades work. Price Discovery (Imbalance), where the market has moved away from fair value and is searching for a new level where trade can be facilitated again — one side has taken control, price moves directionally with conviction, and a market in discovery tends to stay in discovery until it finds new acceptance. Counter-trend strategies fail here; momentum and trend-following work.

This is not a subjective framework. It is observable, repeatable market behavior that plays out every single session on every liquid futures instrument. The question is never whether balance and discovery are happening. The question is which one is happening right now.
